Outdoor places to go with kids in Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Concord, Clayton, Martinez, Lamorinda and Danville! There are so many outdoor places to play we can't possibly list them all but here are a few favorites for your bucket list!
Borges Ranch in Walnut Creek- Borges Ranch is nestled in the foothills of Mount Diablo at Shell Ridge Open Space. Visit with goats, sheep and chickens then take a hike and enjoy the beautiful scenery!
Buchanan Field Airport in Concord – Toddler hot spot! Open to public, fenced in blacktop adjacent to the runway and traffic control tower with a very small play structure. Perfect for plane aficionados, trikes and scooters.
Clarke Memorial Swim Center in Walnut Creek – Three pools (including a shallow 2-3 ft play pool) and a shaded picnic area (open Memorial Day through Labor Day).
Concord Community Pool – Play on huge floating inflatables, jump off the diving board or splash in the shallows at only 2.5' deep (open Memorial Day through Labor Day).
Farmer’s Markets often make a great outing with kids! Most in our area offer craft activities and entertainment, as well as plenty of samples. Visit the web link for a schedule of markets in Contra Costa County.
Hap Magee Ranch Park in Danville – Lovely park, lots of shade, a fabulous playground and a splash pad for water fun (in the summer months only).
Heather Farm Park Playground in Walnut Creek - Hands down the East Bay's best playground, but take note - it is enormous and supervising kids requires quite an effort!
Ice at the Veranda in Concord - Smallish but festive ice skating rink at the Veranda shopping center in Concord. Open in winter months only.
Iron Horse Regional Trail spans between the cities of Concord and Pleasanton. There are several sections of the trail and entrances and exits in our area - please visit the web link for maps and info! This mostly flat, paved trail is great for strolling, biking and scootering with kids!
Lafayette Reservoir - Beautiful views and a paved (stroller perfect!) trail, as well as a playground, grassy fields for running around, boat rentals and even fishing.
Larkey Park Swim Center in Walnut Creek – Super fun sprayground with (mini) waterslides plus a huge pool (open Memorial Day through Labor Day).
Martinez Regional Shoreline - Hang out by the bay, check out the boats and wildlife, take an easy hike, visit the playground or watch the trains go by.
Matteo’s Dream Playground at Hillcrest Park in Concord - Awesome all-abilities, semi-fenced in playground perfect for all ages from first walkers up to tweens.
Meadow Homes Spray Park in Concord - Great free splash pad for kids of all ages provides hours of entertainment on a hot summer day. Water is turned on in summer months only.
Monte Vista Community Pool in Danville – Open Memorial Day through Labor Day).
Moraga Commons Park - Lovely park with a water feature to play in during summer months.
Music and Market Series at Todos Santos Plaza in Concord - Farmer's Market from 4-8 pm with an outdoor concert at 6:30 pm, every Thursday mid May through September.
Music in the Park at Oak Hill Park in Danville - outdoor concerts every other Saturday evening, mid June through mid August
Payless Batting Cages in Concord - 5 covered batting cages available. Rent by the half hour.
Off the Grid Food Truck Market in Pleasant Hill - Every Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 pm food trucks line the street around the Pleasant Hill City Hall, families relax on picnic blankets, kids run and play with delicious food and live music aplenty.
Pixieland Amusement Park in Concord – Adorable and fun amusement park geared for young children (ages 1-6).
Pleasant Hill Aquatic Center – Two pools and a fun sprayground with a reservable grassy, shady picnic area (open Memorial Day through Labor Day). *Note this pool is NOT Pleasant Hill Aquatics, which is a private, member only pool.
Rankin Aquatic Center in Martinez – Play pool with water playground plus large pool with diving boards (open Memorial Day through Labor Day).
Rock City, Mt. Diablo - This gem of the East Bay can be found on the Danville side of Mt. Diablo, just a short ways up the mountain. Climb and explore rock formations and caves - best for kids age 3-4 years and up.
Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek - Get some fresh air, walk around and enjoy this 3.5 garden and all the beauty it has to offer.
San Ramon Central Park – Tons of shade and awesome water feature (slightly out of our locality but too good not to mention!)
Side Board Lafayette - This awesome cafe is located across the street from Lafayette Plaza Park and offers picnic service with blankets and games! Pick up something to eat for you and the littles (the kids menu is great!) and enjoy an afternoon relaxing in the sunshine.
Six Flags Hurricane Harbor in Concord – Huge waterpark perfect for thrill seekers with plenty to please those looking to relax as well (open mid May through mid October).
Skipolini's Pizza in Clayton - Wonderful patio area and play structure for the kiddos! (The Walnut Creek location has a small play structure as well on their enclosed patio.)
Small World Park in Pittsburg – Not in our exact locality but only 15 minutes drive from Martinez/Concord/Clayton and so fun! This adorable, extremely inexpensive amusement park is a gem for the youngest children.
The Gardens at Heather Farm in Walnut Creek - explore, learn and enjoy nature in this beautiful free public garden (and follow up with a visit to the amazing all-abilities Heather Farm Playground).
The Grove Park in Clayton - Lovely park in the town center with a water feature that runs in the summer.
The Veranda in Concord - this shopping center has it all, with plenty of outdoor dining, a climbing structure, dancing fountain show and seasonal ice skating rink.
Walnut Creek on Ice – Ice skating mid-November through Mid-January only.
